Congratulations to Anthony Texeiera Chapter X-Brian Piccolo Award
Congratulations to James Ziemba for being Named Scholar Athlete. This marks the second consecutive year the baseball program has had the St. Joseph Scholar Athlete.
4/19/13- St. Joseph 7, South Brunswick 5
(Star Ledger)- A three-run triple by Brandon Ciambruschini highlighted a six-run fifth inning as St. Joseph (Met.), No. 7 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, defeated South Brunswick, 7-5, in Metuchen. Alejandro Sotillo added a two-run double in the rally for St. Joseph. Matt Woody earned the victory, allowing three earned runs over seven innings while striking out nine and walking one. Ciambruschini finished 2-for-4 with a double and triple. Brian Oates went 3-for-3 for South Brunswick.
(MSG Varsity)-Over the course of two weeks Brandon Ciambruschini has seen his stock soar, reputation grow and confidence skyrocket. Not bad for a relative unknown who, in the span of a year, went from not even being issued a varsity jersey at St. Joseph of Metuchen to someone whose hustle is calling for extra detergent these days to remove the grass stains accumulated upon the one he now proudly dons. His incomparable range in center field defused a potential big inning for South Brunswick at a time when the Vikings were threatening to bust things open. It also infused St. Joseph with some offensive electricity, with Ciambruschini accordingly supplying the biggest charge to rally the Falcons to a 7-5 triumph on Friday in Metuchen. The overall timeliness of Ciambruschini was perhaps most appreciated by senior right-hander Matt Woody, who overcame a shaky second inning to find his groove in going the distance to improve his mark to 3-0.South Brunswick touched Woody for three runs in that frame behind an RBI single from Ken Drost and two-run base knock by Brian Oates to assume a 3-0 lead, one it sought to pad in the fifth. The Vikings had runners on the corners with two outs when Sean Keenan sent a shot toward the gap in left-center that seemed ticketed for extra bases. Instead, it nestled harmlessly in the glove of Ciambruschini, who raced to his right to make the running snag.“Plays like that get everyone going,” Ciambruschini said. “It wakes up the bench and picks the energy up.”Which St. Joseph confirmed in the bottom of the frame.Joe McCaffrey led off with a double, Chris Blades singled through the left side and Nick Johnson worked a walk to load the bases for Ciambruschini. After taking a first-pitch breaking ball, he got into a 1-0 fastball from Rutgers-bound T.J. Perkowski, who came on in relief of starter Ty Robinson, and drilled it to right for a bases-clearing triple that sprang St. Joseph (8-2), No. 5 in the MSG Varsity New Jersey Top 15, in front, 4-3. “I knew he was going to come at me with a curve ball but it was in the dirt,” said Ciambruschini, who doubled and scored on a grounder by Mark Bobko in the third to pare the deficit to 3-1. “He had to come back with a fastball and left it over the plate. I put a good swing on it and hoped for the best.”“For him, it’s important just to know, when you get a good pitch, see it and drive it,” St. Joseph coach Steve Bucchignano said. “Otherwise, take your walks and keep the line moving.”Ciambruschini ushered in more opportunities further down the Falcons’ order. Designated hitter Alejandro Sotillo extended the lead to 7-3 with a two-run double as St. Joe’s sent 11 batters to the plate during the sir-run outburst. Meanwhile, Woody overcame his early woes, retiring eight straight before averting the trouble in the fifth. He got an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play in the sixth and opened the seventh by unleashing arguably his best fastball of the game to nail down a strikeout. However, South Brunswick made things interesting by stringing together three straight hits, the last a two-run single from Chris Huber.
Bucchignano paid a mound visit, tempted to lift his starter only to exit convinced of Woody’s intentions to finish the job, which he did by getting a fly out to Ciambruschini before ending the contest with the last of his nine strikeouts.“I said my arm feels fine and I got this,” Woody, who allowed eight hits and two walks, said of his brief conversation with Bucchignano. “I got my legs going and that helped me use my speed a little bit more.”Oates was a catalyst for South Brunwick at of the No. 9 spot. The senior third baseman went 3 for 3 with a run scored while Perkowski finished 2 for 4 and scored once.
4/16/13- St. Joseph 4, Perth Amboy 3
(Star Ledger)-St. Joseph (Met.), No. 7 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, scored four runs in the top of the second and held on to defeat Perth Amboy, 4-3, in Perth Amboy.Sean Rappleyea earned the victory, pitching six innings and allowing three run on six hits. He also struck out five.
4/15/13- Perth Amboy 3, St. Joseph 1
(Star Ledger)Juan Batista delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift Perth Amboy to a 3-1 victory over St. Joseph of Metuchen, No. 7 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, in Perth Amboy.Perth Amboy rallied for three in the sixth inning, tying the score on an RBI double by Fernando Rosa. Jose Ortiz allowed two hits over seven innings for Perth Amboy, striking out three and walking one.
4/13/13- Riverdale Baptist 4, St. Joseph 0
(Star Ledger)- Nationally Ranked Riverdale Baptist of Maryland used a four-run sixth inning to defeat St. Joseph (Met.), 4-0, in Upper Marlboro, Md. James Ziemba allowed three earned runs on five hits for St. Joseph. He struck out five while walking two. Anthony Teixeira went 1-for-3 with a double for St. Joseph.
4/14/13- St. Joseph 8, Salesianum 1
(Star Ledger)-Matt Woody allowed one run on four hits with eight strikeouts and one walk in six and a third innings to propel St. Joseph of Metuchen, No. 8 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, to an 8-1 triumph over Salesianum in Wilmington, Del.Brandon Bielak went 3-for-4 with a double, triple, run and two RBI for St. Joseph. Chris Blades was 2-for-3 with a triple, RBI and a run. Brandon Ciambruschini also had an RBI triple.
4/10/13- Congratulations to former Falcon Nick Annunziata on being named Rookie of the Week for the Liberty League. Annunziata is hitting .288 (15 for 52), with 4 doubles, 1 home run and 11 runs batted in. Congratulations Nick on a well deserved honor, keep up the good work and continue to represent the Falcon family.
4/8/13- St. Joseph 5, Immaculata 1
(Home News Article) BRIDGEWATER — With only a couple hundred spectators inside TD Bank Ballpark, the cavernous stadium provided ideal acoustics for junior right-hander Brandon Bielak, whose fastball popped the catcher’s mitt with such velocity the sound authoritatively echoed off the outfield walls. Bielak, who has already accepted a full athletic scholarship to the University of Notre Dame, tossed a complete-game two-hitter with eight strikeouts while leading the St. Joseph High School baseball team to Monday’s 5-1 victory over Immaculata “We knew what we were getting when we were coming in,” said Immaculata coach Kevin Cust, who played for two years in the Atlanta Braves organization and believes Bielak is a legitimate professional prospect.“He’s got great stuff. He locates, can command the zone on both sides of the plate and he’s got a good breaking ball. You could see the speed of the game is totally different with him on the mound. He’s committed to Notre Dame. They’ll be lucky to have him, but they may not get him (if a lucrative professional offer comes Bielak’s way).”Undefeated St. Joseph (5-0) snapped a 1-1 deadlock with three unearned runs in the fifth and added an insurance run in the sixth when designated hitter Freddie Eyer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.Defense let the Spartans (1-2) down for the second consecutive outing. An outfield error and passed ball directly led to two fifth-inning runs as St. Joseph, which stranded 12 runners, benefitted from Immaculata’s generosity.“Our defense has cost us two games so far, so we are going to have to piece things together,” said Cust, noting the Spartans were knotted 6-6 with Watching Hills over the weekend before miscues led to a 12-6 setback.“I’ve got two guys (Hunterdon Central transfer Drew Rodriguez and Franklin transfer Jeremiah Muhammad) coming back. They’ve got to sit their 30 days (under NJSIAA transfer rules), so when they get back things will get together. But it’s not an excuse. We really just need to try to bear down and make plays. Against Watchung Hills we didn’t make plays and this was the same kind of thing that happened today. You can’t give good teams outs.”
Bielak issued just one walk, hit a batter and threw an economical 94 pitches. The only hits he yielded were a fourth-inning triple that rolled to the left-centerfield wall and a sixth-inning single through the left-side of the infield. His fastball, according to a Kansas City Royals scout, topped out at 90 mph, but St. Joseph coach Steve Bucchignano didn’t need a radar gun to know Bielak was bringing heat.“I’ve seen him throw harder, but in a place like this where there are surroundings, it definitely echoes big-time,” Bucchignano said, noting the sound of Bielak’s fastball is less impressive in an open field.“I know he’s got (velocity) and uses it when he needs it. His arm and his velocity are different from everybody else, but to me it’s just another day with Brandon.”Bielak and catcher Kevin Bock relied heavily upon the fastball the first time through Immaculata’s order before mixing in more breaking balls. After three no-hit innings, Bielak yielded a leadoff triple to Mike Wagner, who scored on a passed ball to forge a 1-1 tie.Bock helped his batterymate, forcing home the game’s first run in the bottom of the third, drawing a full-count walk with two away. Bock said he thought that initial run might be enough, the way Bielak was throwing.“He just gets better and better as the game goes on,” Bock said. “Once we get in that groove, there’s nothing that can stop him. He knows how to throw.”
(STAR LEDGER ARTICLE)-The Middlesex County team, No. 8 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, has had a flair for the dramatic of late, but it needed everything the right arm of ace Brandon Bielak could give it, as well as the ability to take advantage of a few Immaculata mistakes, to earn a 5-1 decision over the Somerville school yesterday at TD Bank Park in Bridgewater."That's not easy," St. Joseph coach Steve Bucchignanosaid. "Immaculata has been a very good program for many, many years. Beating them 5-1, I was shocked we scored that many runs. We put pressure on the defense, like we talk about all that time, and they made some miscues that we capitalized on. That's how we're going to score a lot of runs."Of the five runs St. Joseph (5-0) scored, one came on a bases-loaded walk, one on a hit batsmen with the bases loaded, one on an error and another on a wild pitch. Those four, along with an RBI groundout by third baseman Joe McCaffrey, were more than enough for Bielak. The junior, who has already committed to Notre Dame on a full scholarship, threw a complete-game two-hitter, allowing an unearned run with eight strikeouts, a walk and a hit batter as St. Joseph didn't need the rallies and game-winning hits they've been thriving on so far this year."It felt good to just cruise out there," Bielak said. "We finally got some warm weather. We took advantage of it. I just came out and threw strikes. Everyone's on the same page and we're playing as a team."Bielak is now 2-0 on the season with a 1.07 ERA on the season. He has allowed four hits in 13 innings with 19 strikeouts and four walks."He's our go-to guy," Bucchignano said. "He's very good. He's our No. 1 for a reason. He goes out there and gives us a shot to compete every single game. We're going to need him to step up late in the year and pitch against some pretty good teams. If he can do that against these guys, who usually swing it very well year in and year out, I like our chances when he steps out there."Bielak held Immaculata (1-2) hitless until the fourth, when center fielder Brendan Wagner drilled a shot all the way to the wall in left-center for a triple. He then came around to score on a passed ball for Immaculata's only run. Luke Bonfield had Immaculata's other hit with a seventh-inning single.
The Somerville school adjusted to Bielak as the game went along, putting the ball in play over the last three innings as Bielak only struck out one batter in that span. But Immaculata wasn't able to get any rally of substance going. Wagner hit what appeared to be a sure double in the with a runner on and one out in the sixth, only to have St. Joseph first baseman Michael Ramirez make a sensational leaping grab."When that guy made that play, that was kind of the nail in the coffin for us, unfortunately," Immaculata coach Kevin Cust said. "We battled, and we had some good at-bats in the end. Our offense is never going to be the problem with us. It's just making sure we come ready to play with our defense."
